The icon for Stranger Things Return of Joe Keery with Second Album DECIDE
Fans of Stranger Things, rejoice. Under the alias Djo, Joe Keery, who plays Steve “The Hair” Harrington in the popular Netflix series, debuted his most recent album DECIDE on September 16. Keery’s music has an imaginative ’80s vibe, and his lyrics discuss his views of the world.
Keery distinguishes himself from current pop culture musical trends by writing songs that his audience would remember and find significant.
DECIDE depicts navigating in a world centered on technology with a singular fusion of new wave, ’80s rock, and electronic pop undertones.
The 13 songs on Keery’s CD each contribute to the overall emotional and rhythmic atmosphere that captures the essence of his life in his late 20s. Keery sings about his way of living on the album’s first track, “Runner,” to an upbeat electronic beat.
Keery sings, “People never change / Money grows and dies / But I have to try.”
The entire album is Keery’s continual internal monologue in which he tries to articulate his fundamental conflicts. DECIDE serves as a vehicle for expressing self-actualization and the act of defining oneself in a constantly shifting environment.
Keery sings, “The world is changing and upgrading / Faster than we can control,” in the song “Half Life.”
Keery’s lyrics can inspire a voyage through a variety of feelings and moods, enabling us to learn about the vivacious coexistence of doubt, loneliness, nostalgia, and love.
The album’s powerful dance beats and retro aesthetic appear to have been influenced by his popular role in Stranger Things. Fans can even detect background music cues from the Netflix smash series’ theme song in the opening of the song “Half Life,” where he adds static over eerie piano chords.
Because it reminds us that we all experience comparable challenges at some point in our lives, the album has the creative capacity to connect with a broad variety of listeners. Keery accompanies this artistic goal with the keyboard-driven, building song “Figure You Out.”
“How can you get to know yourself / I’ve been trying to figure you out / Tell me, would you lend a hand?” Kery sings.
Background
Joe Keery, also known as Joseph David Keery, was born on April 24, 1992, in Newburyport, Massachusetts. His parents are Thomas and Laura Keery, and he is the second oldest of four sisters who raised him. After completing his primary and middle school education at River Valley Charter School, he transferred to Newburyport High School. Keery attended Theater in the Open, a performing arts camp at Maudslay State Park, when he was younger. He eventually started his acting career in high school and later attended the Theater School at DePaul University, where he eventually graduated in 2014.
Following his graduation from DePaul University, Keery started attending auditions; he attended over a hundred before securing the part of Steve Harrington in “Stranger Things.” Over the years, Keery has made numerous film and television appearances. He appeared in “Empire” from 2015, “Chicago Fire” from 2012, and “Henry Gamble’s Birthday Party” from 2015.
Late in 2015, Keery was chosen to play Steve in the Netflix series “Stranger Things.” He initially turned in an audition tape for the part of Jonathan, but then sent in one for his character. He was reintroduced in the second season, which debuted on October the day before Halloween, October 27, 2017.
As one of the lead guitarists for the Chicago-based garage and psych-rock band Post Animal, Keery is also a musician. Keery contributed vocals and guitar work to the sophomore album “When I Think Of You In A Castle” in April 2018. Despite no longer being a band member as of 2019, Keery continues to make his solo songs under the alias “Djo.”
DJO releases new album Decide
Joe Keery, well known for his role as Steve Harrington in “Stranger Things,” is a multifaceted actor who does more than simply battle demagogrons and show off his flawless hair.
On September 16, Keery, who performs as Djo, put out his second album, “Decide.” It is without a doubt one of my favorite albums from 2022 after listening to it often.

Thanks to DjoTime and Instagram for the image.
The 13 songs on the independent alternative album “Decide” are indie. Keery drew inspiration from renowned performers like Talking Heads and Tame Impala when developing this album. His distinctive aesthetic has a futuristic and psychedelic vibe that captivated and enthralled me throughout.
“Runner,” the opening track on the album, deals with transition in a similar way to the other songs.
People never change, but I have to try, sings Djo.”Love and hate decide / Money grows and dies / People never change / But I have to try,” he belts out.
Each song conveys a similar message of how everyone experiences a transitional time in their lives, which typically occurs around the mid-20s, and how this time helped shape Keery into the person he is now.
The fourth song on this album, “Fool,” introduces a fresh concept and sonic direction to the work. Going above and above for someone who just sees you as a fool, this lively and catchy song captures the youthful stupidity of nostalgia.
The next song is “End of Beginning” and it comes right after. This song, which is my favorite on the album, has been playing continuously in my headphones for the past two weeks.
This song not only makes Keery’s killer pipes known to the listener, but it also exudes a melancholy mood due to the simplicity and sincerity of his lyrics and voice.
When Djo returns to Chicago, “And when I’m back there, I feel it / Another version of me, I was in it / I wave goodbye to the end of beginning,” he sings.
The 13 songs on the independent alternative album “Decide” are indie.

Keery discusses the challenges he had as he transitioned out of his Chicago roots and into adulthood. This song is more melancholy than others on the CD because Keery’s raw side doesn’t usually show through in his songs.
Not every song on the CD is a 10, and some of them can drag. When I think of that, “Climax” and “Half Life” spring to mind. When compared to the other tracks on “Decide,” both of these songs looked average.
Any listener will find “I Want Your Video” to be a joyful, lively, and danceable music. In stark contrast to songs like “Go For It” and “Climax,” the eighth beat from the album stands out as an instant favorite.
The following track, “Change,” was made available as a single by Djo on June 22. This song garnered a lot of attention and introduced Djo’s upcoming new style and sound, “Decide.”
The songs “Figure You Out” and “Slither” mark the album’s conclusion. These two songs discuss moving forward, making an effort to let go of the person you were in the past, and dealing with the person you have become up to this point in life.
In “Slither,” Djo sings, “At the end of the day, we all wanna be someone.”
These are the album’s final lines, and they perfectly capture the meaning of “Decide.”
As an actor, Keery has taken on a variety of personalities, but ultimately, “Decide” reveals that he is just a Chicagoan who had to decide who he really wanted to be while adjusting to life as a rising celebrity.
Conclusion
In conclusion, Joe Keery’s musical journey is a testament to his versatility and talent. He has seamlessly transitioned from acting to music, leaving an indelible mark on both fields. With an evolving sound, a commitment to authenticity, and a deep connection with his fans, Joe Keery’s future in music looks promising and full of exciting possibilities.
